Maryland Medical Waste Management | Medical & Biohazardous Waste Disposal

As one of the original 13 colonies, Maryland also inspired Francis Scott Key to pen America’s iconic national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner. Just over 6 million people call this mid-Atlantic state home, and it is nestled between Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia and Washington DC. While steeped in history, today it’s famous for its unique flora and fauna, boating, crabbing and a culinary culture all of its own.

Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the US. Dotted with waterfront towns, brimming with an abundance of oysters, clams and their world famous crabs. Known for their abundant strawberries, The Lancaster County Dutch Market of Germantown, is the perfect place to enjoy some local snacks. Boasting a variety of marshes, wetlands, parks, forests, rivers and white sandy beaches. Major attractions include: Chestertown, host of the ‘Tea Party Festival’ every May. The historical towns of Oxford and Cambridge, Hart-Miller and Hooper’s Islands, all with their own unique history and signature dishes. Annapolis, also known as America’s ‘Sailing Capital’, gets wild on Wednesday nights between April and September with night-time sailboat racing. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge covers 25,000 acres of the eastern shore, a popular place for migrating birds and bird watchers, while fossil hunters flock to Calvert Cliffs to marvel in the remains of ancient sharks, birds and whales.

Crisfield hosts the annual Labor Day ‘National Hard Crab Derby’ and is considered the ‘Seafood Capital of the World’, while Smith Island is home to the state’s official dessert the ‘Smith Island Cake’ featuring thin layers of cake held together by gooey chocolate fudge. A number of famous faces were born in the ‘Old Line State’ including, actors Ed Norton, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Anna Faris and The Hoff. The band R.E.M. even have a song titled "Rockville" after the Maryland city the lead singer didn't want his girlfriend at the time to return to. While Baltimore was the birthplace of the most decorated Olympic Champion in history; Michael Phelps, baseball legend Babe Ruth and author Tom Clancy. Maryland was also home to some medical firsts. The National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick details how the war lead to many medical innovations that we still benefit from today. In 1828 the St. Francis Academy was the first dental school in the world. While the first female professor of medicine, Dr. Florence Rina Sabin, graduated from the John Hopkins School of Medicine in 1901.

Maryland Medical Waste Regulations Put Simply

Today, Maryland has over 80 hospitals as well, as aged care facilities and dental clinics all generating medial and or biohazardous waste. Daniels Health has been guiding Maryland’s healthcare facilities for decades to ensure compliance when it comes to the handling and disposal of their medical waste.

The DHMH (Department of Health and Mental Hygiene) is responsible for the definition of regulated medical waste in Maryland. In addition to these regulations the MDE (Department of the Environment) sets the regulations that govern of all aspects of the transport and disposal of special medical waste as well as keeping records of medical waste activity. Waste generators are required to file a notification if they generate 50 lbs. or more of special medical waste in a calendar month or are holding more than 50 lbs. of special biohazard waste on site at any time.

This is where Daniels can help! Check out our guide for biohazard waste waste regulations in Maryland below:
