Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to RMW/Biohazardous waste after disposal?

Once an RMW container is filled and then picked up by a certified waste service provider, the contents inside should be disposed of properly. Depending on whether you have used a compliant red bag and a box or a reusable biohazard waste container determines next steps. If a red bag and cardboard box are used, then the entire box and all its contents are treated by an autoclave or an incinerator. If a reusable container is used, the regulated waste inside is treated by autoclave of incinerated. The biohazard container is then properly cleaned and sanitized, rendering it safe for future use. You may be asking, what does autoclaving and incineration consist of. Autoclaving is a heat-based treatment process that destroys microorganisms with saturated steam and pressure which in turn sterilizes the regulated waste. Incineration can also be used to treat biohazardous waste but has decreased in popularity over the last few decades due to the harmful emissions and high cost associated with treating waste by incineration.
