Four Walls Approach

Daniels Health doesn’t work out of the back dock; we are within your facility transforming waste-handling through smarter containment and data-driven outcomes.

Inside the Four Walls

Across four decades of partnering with hospitals to improve clinical and environmental outcomes in healthcare waste management, we’ve learned that performance is shaped as much inside the hospital as it is by what leaves it. From day one, our team of account managers, clinical educators, environmental and waste specialists, and hospital technicians work within your four walls to understand your workflows, requirements, and optimization opportunities.

From the OR, Pharmacy, and ICU to patient rooms, soiled utility rooms, and the loading dock, we map how waste is handled end to end. This allows us to pinpoint opportunities to improve safety, reduce costs, strengthen compliance, lower environmental impact, and drive labor efficiencies.

Our Approach

Designing an optimal hospital waste management program, and achieving best-in-class results is driven by the execution of the following key areas:

  • The current waste management program is audited to understand the needs and objectives of the facility
  • Any issues restricting waste segregation efficiency + compliance are identified and resolved
  • The placement of bins for each specific waste stream is location-mapped to deliver optimal waste segregation effectiveness, reducing compliance risks and the costs and environmental burden of waste over-classification.
  • Data tracking is established at a location and department level for the fill levels and exchange of all sharps, trace chemo, and non-hazardous pharmaceutical containers
  • Rightsizing opportunities are identified for high traffic locations where larger containers will lessen container exchanges, reduce costs and drive a positive improvement in patient interruptions
  • KPIs are set and performance measures agreed upon to drive key objectives
  • Education and Training tailored to the hospital or hospital system, and tied to program goals
  • Program is monitored, audited and reviewed for continued accountability

Waste Plan for Hospitals

Daniels Health reviews existing waste plans and completes a gap analysis to identify areas for improvement. Waste audits are conducted to assess segregation, container placement, and waste stream management. KPIs are developed in line with safety, sustainability, efficiency, compliance, and education. The waste plan is tailored to each facility, focusing on optimizing waste segregation, right-sizing containers, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements. Regular audits and program performance assessments provide corrective measures and a blueprint for continued improvement.

Working within Your Four Walls

A New Approach to Hospital Waste Management

Our New Normal requires that we look at hospital waste disposal and management through a clinical lens; from waste mapping and scrutiny of how many times waste is touched, to the implementation of clinically-engineered containment solutions that drive safety and infection control outcomes, Daniels Health is a service partner that understands the hospital environment and delivers solutions that enhance rather than interrupt patient care.

Ongoing Service and Reporting

Daniels Health delivers comprehensive waste-stream reporting and data benchmarking at department and facility levels, enabling real-time comparisons with healthcare systems nationwide. Our standard reports include:

  • Containers exchanged by waste type and size
  • Detailed weight and container fill utilization by waste stream and container type/size
  • Facility average volume by waste stream, benchmarking individual sites across a hospital system and against industry standards
  • Waste-stream spend analysis
  • Plastic divergence
  • Waste optimization
  • Custom reporting upon request

Reports are available at both facility and enterprise levels. Our local operations, service and account management teams regularly audit and analyze program success, focusing on efficiency, segregation, container-volume utilization, and compliance. Performance reporting includes system-wide trend analysis, hospital and department-level breakdowns, benchmarking against standards, and is regularly distributed and presented during executive business reviews, with recommended actions for optimization.

Our Four Walls Approach in Action

Daniels does not manage waste from the outside. We work inside your four walls to align goals, embed accountability, and improve performance across the life of the contract.

  • Dedicated Account Manager

A single point of ownership for issue resolution, service escalations, and continuous improvement aligned to program goals.

  • Executive Business Reviews

  • Data to Outcomes

Benchmarking and performance tracking that turns insights into corrective action, efficiency gains, and reduced avoidable cost.

  • Right Solution for the Right Waste Stream

Stream-specific program design, including formulary analysis for pharmaceutical waste, container right-sizing for labor efficiency, and placement strategies that improve segregation and downstream savings.

  • Logistics Blueprinting

Storage, movement, and transport planning that prioritizes safety at every handoff and reduces burden on soiled utility rooms and the loading dock.

Right Container. Right Place. Real Results.

Containment programs are developed to ensure the right product is in the right position, with all staff properly educated on the use of the containment system. Daniels Health offers industry-leading reusable sharps and medical waste containers, including the Sharpsmart system, which is certified to CSA standards and FDA 510(k) approved. Container placement and configuration are optimized based on site assessments, and all containers are barcoded for lifecycle tracking. The containment plan is supported by regular audits, data-driven adjustments, and ongoing education to maintain optimal performance.
