40 Years of Making Healthcare Safer

Four Decades of Daniels Health

In 1986, our founder and CEO, Dan Daniels, had a chance encounter with bacteriologist Allan Perceval, changing the course of his life and marking the beginnings of Daniels Health. The two had connected over the sale of a secondhand washing machine that Allan was hoping to use as a sanitation method for a makeshift sharps collection invention.

Intrigued by the “why” behind Allan’s invention and the human problem he was trying to solve, Dan was compelled to dig deeper, and upon visiting the Alfred Hospital with Allan, caught an unshakeable vision for a product that could systemically reduce needlestick injuries.

4 decades later, Daniels Health has evolved into a global healthcare waste innovation company, with customers spanning six countries.

A lot has happened in the intervening years – the company has gone from servicing just sharps waste to providing holistic waste management solutions, moved primary business operations from Australia to the US, and patented several groundbreaking products that modernize waste containment, clinical mobility, transportation, and container disinfection. We have supported the healthcare industry through the AIDS/HIV epidemics, the global COVID pandemic, and all the ups and downs of daily continuity of care. Through it all, we remain committed to our founding belief that no healthcare worker should suffer from something as avoidable as a needlestick injury.

Four Decades of History

Founding & First Steps (1986–1989)

Dan Daniels founded Integrated Sharps Disposal Systems in Melbourne with a prototype sewerage-pipe collector, followed by its first purpose-designed reusable sharps container – the Funnel Series. St Vincent’s Hospital became the first customer to adopt the reusable container technology. As Australia grappled with the AIDS epidemic and new anti-landfill legislation, Daniels successfully challenged the EPA to accept safer and more sustainable alternatives to burning medical waste.

Early Growth & Resilience (1990–1993)

Daniels expanded into Western Australia – establishing its second plant in Perth. We entered New South Wales with a $3000 secondhand truck, while incinerator rivals formed an illegal association (ANZMWIG) to lobby against us and prevent market penetration. Competitors even planted needles in containers and bugged Daniels’ offices – sabotage that federal police uncovered, cementing the company’s reputation for resilience.

New Treatment Technology & Competition (1994–1997)

The Daniels “Hammermill” launched, processing 350 tonnes of medical waste weekly. Rebranding as The Daniels Corporation, the company weathered PR smear campaigns and bribery attempts from rival waste firms to prevent its expansion in the domestic market, but through it all remained focused on its mission of clinical impact and safety transformation. Our first advisory board was established, and we started giving from our charitable foundation.

Innovation & International Expansion (1998–2000)

The first Sharpsmart container was trialled in Middlemore Hospital in New Zealand. Daniels established a joint venture in Canada and shipped its first international order, while also entering into the US and UK via joint ventures. We secured 510 FDA approval for our safety technology in the US, and sold our Australian service operations to fund global growth. By the end of the decade, Sharpsmart containers had been validated through rigorous child-safety and infection-control testing worldwide and we had grown from one man and a van to over 100 staff.

US Market Establishment (2001–2008)

Daniels won major US hospital accounts including Fairview and Northwestern Memorial, and established manufacturing and treatment plants across multiple states with our first robotic Washsmart machine installed in Chowchilla California. We launched our 64-Series container for surgical instruments, and across our safety-container range reached 100,000+ container locations nationwide. Peer-reviewed studies on sharps injury reduction built scientific credibility, while global staff grew to 179 across five countries.

Rebrand & Global Focus (2014–2017)

A 6 year clinical study on our Sharpsmart container was published in the Journal of Infection Control. Daniels sold its Australian service business for $183M, redirecting focus toward North America and European expansion. We established our Four Walls hospital partnership strategy, and expanded our Canadian services into Manitoba. The company rebranded globally to Daniels Health/Sharpsmart, established charitable foundations from the sale of the Australian business, and set an ambitious goal to double the business in 3 years – a goal which was achieved by 2020.

Foundations, Resilience & Adaptation (2018–2021)

We formed our own property group, building a framework for our future expansion, acquired two hazardous waste businesses to strengthen specialization, developed a proprietary container scanning and data capture tool, and launched our first non-burn sharps treatment in the UK. Prior stockpiling of 18 months’ container supply proved pivotal during COVID. Daniels rapidly deployed containers for pandemic field hospitals, supported vaccine rollouts, and witnessed the needle administering the world’s first COVID vaccine being disposed in a Sharpsmart container. We won a 7-year Quebec market battle and commissioned a plant in St Jean, while also opening a new processing and treatment site in British Columbia Canada.

40th Anniversary Milestone (2022–2026)

Daniels reached 2,300 global staff, secured landmark NHS and British Columbia government contracts, bought the Secure a Drug brand and drug denaturing products to market, established in-house manufacturing in Racine Wisconsin, and launched robotics and AI-driven quality control systems. Celebrating 40 years in January 2026, the company’s single-year US growth surpassed the growth achieved across three decades in Australia – marking sustained innovation and market leadership.
