Kyle Shields Partners with Daniels and Breakthrough T1D for Diabetes Awareness

Daniels Health is committed to making healthcare safer, and one dedicated member of our pride has played an active role in advancing that mission.

Kyle Shields, Commercial Excellence Manager, living with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and now President of the Breakthrough T1D Illinois Young Leadership Committee (YLC), helped put together the One Party event in support of advancing T1D research.

Daniels Health was proud to contribute as a key sponsor.

The Night

On June 12, Kyle played a vital role in organizing and fundraising for One Party. The event brought together more than 200 young professionals for a night of fundraising, auctioning, networking and entertainment.

The event raised more than $100,000, far surpassing the original goal of $60,000, with the funds directly supporting diabetes research.

Supporting YLC’s efforts was important to Daniels, as it aligns closely with our mission to make healthcare safer.

“It’s nice to be supported by Daniels, especially for a cause that is so personal to me,” Kyle said. “Daniels and Breakthrough T1D are a perfect match. Diabetics generate a lot of sharps waste, so having a medical waste disposal company as a sponsor just made sense.”

Nine additional Daniels team members attended the event, showing their support through donations and participation in the auction. Our team was impressed and inspired by Breakthrough T1D’s efforts in advancing the healthcare space.

“Innovation is a key pillar for Daniels, and as someone who lives with T1D, I’ve gotten to experience Breakthrough T1D’s innovation firsthand” Kyle added. “In a way, Breakthrough T1D has also helped make healthcare safer by allowing diabetics to live a normal life with groundbreaking technology and earlier detection of T1D.”

Reflection of One Party

Kyle pointed out that just a few decades ago, a cure for T1D seemed out of reach. Thanks to continued research and modern technology, that dream is now closer than ever.

Kyle hopes attendees saw the power of a strong support system and what a group of like-minded people could achieve together. He also hopes the event raised awareness and inspired others to learn more about T1D.

Diabetes Sharps Waste

For diabetes patients, the daily use of self-monitoring blood glucose tools and insulin administration generates a significant amount of sharps waste.

In a 2018 survey of 150 patients with diabetes, researchers found:

  • 38% engaged in improper disposal methods
  • 64% had never received training on sharps usage
  • 50% reported reusing their lancets
  • 21% admitted to reusing their pen needles

This study highlights the challenges of improper sharps disposal in healthcare. Addressing this issue requires education and access to proper waste management solutions.

Daniels Health Focus on Education

At Daniels Health, we recognize that education is key to creating safer healthcare environments. We’re committed to empowering people with the knowledge to improve safety and drive change in clinical waste management.
