Tina Parker on Career Paths with Daniels

Tina Parker is a hard-working mother of two boys who has found a rewarding, and ever-evolving career path with Daniels Health. She sat down with me in hopes that her journey to success will inspire others to find their path with Daniels.

Tina, thank you so much for sitting down with me to discuss your career journey with Daniels. Like any good superhero, you have an origin story. Can you tell me a little bit about where you’re from originally?

"I’m a Chicago girl born and raised. I am the middle girl in a family of 5 brothers and sisters. I attended Kelvyn Park High School in Chicago and although we didn’t have lots of money or many new things, we made the most of what we had. I’m proud of my upbringing because it shaped me into who I am today. I will always care about and help people less fortunate than myself. My past drives me towards the future."

How did you first hear about Daniels and what motivated you to apply?

"My father was already working at the Sturtevant plant and he told me about a part-time opportunity in administration; I had been considering a career change. I looked up the Daniels website and I was immediately excited by the prospect of joining a company that provides world class safety products to the healthcare industry."

That’s pretty unique that you got to work at the same company as your father!

"I had the opportunity to work with my father at Sturtevant for a short period of time. We are both very proud with have a strong work ethic. I think we both drove ourselves to work harder—to ensure we achieved all we could for each other as much as ourselves. My work ethic definitely comes from my father so working hard was the really the only option."

What was the most rewarding as you started your journey at the Sturtevant plant? What was the most challenging?

"The most rewarding thing was definitely the opportunity to work with such a great team. They welcomed me into the family and I felt a strong connection from day one. I felt supported throughout my training and I made sure to assist others whenever I could.

The most challenging thing was that the workload doesn’t always balance to meet our needs. There were many days when we had a mountain of work and firm deadlines; However, we got our heads down and made sure we put in the time and effort to make our team succeed."

You transferred to the Chicago Support Office in March 2017, what motivated you to make that change?

"The change was all about my home life. I have two amazing boys, Aiden (age 6) and Jake (age 8). I knew we had to move back to Chicago, so I could provide them opportunities to develop as individuals and grow up near our extended family."

And even your role here has evolved quite a bit—can you explain your current role now and how it came to be?

"My current role is Transportation Manager. I’ve been on a steep learning curve over the past 18 months. My first role at the Chicago office was Compliance Administration. I’ve been really fortunate as I’ve had the opportunity to work with all of the plants by providing support for a wide range of operations functions. I was also privileged to be member of a small project team who transformed the way the business manages its transport and plant operations. I have completed a number of key tasks to improve our information management as well as worked heavily on the Operating Data Platform (which has been hugely successful and is used daily by the operational management teams to drive business success)."

How have you been supported in your career goals?

"Daniels is a family-owned business with a strong sense of inclusion and cooperation. As soon as they became aware that I needed to move my family from Wisconsin to Chicago, I was told, “Don’t worry we will find a suitable role for you at the Chicago Office.” From there I have been asked to assist with a wide range of activities that have grown my knowledge and experience at an extraordinary rate; it’s been a fantastic journey. Everyone is very supportive and regularly offers to assist wherever they see opportunities."

What keeps you motivated?

"I like questioning and reviewing our existing business processes. I look for opportunities to modify or expand them to better fit our needs and provide improved outcomes. As I don’t have sufficient time for dedicated focus, I usually try to simplify and automate the processes where I can. The really exciting part actually comes when the improvements are implemented and I’m able to see the benefits for the management teams."

Do you have any advice for someone who wants to begin a career with Daniels?

"If you’re thinking of any career at Daniels, definitely do it! This is the best company I’ve worked for and there are endless possibilities. I can’t believe the opportunities I’ve had so far; the journey has been extremely rewarding and satisfying."
