Medical & Biohazardous Waste Disposal in Wyoming

Daniels Health is here to drive your healthcare waste optimization in the efficient management of all medical and biohazardous waste streams.

As America's leader in medical waste management innovation, we don't look at healthcare waste management as a 'bag + bin + truck + treatment' model - we look at its total cost, environmental and safety impact on all aspects of a healthcare environment, including clinical staff! At Daniels we pride ourselves in innovating forward – designing products and solutions that reduce infection transfer risk, minimize touches, increase efficiencies, drive better segregation outcomes, and minimize costs. If there’s no transformation, we’re no better than “the next guy”.

Daniels services over 8000 healthcare facilities across the US from single physicians offices through to laboratories, long term care, oncology and multi-site hospitals, and is a total capability partner delivering solutions across all healthcare waste streams including sharps, trace chemotherapy, RCRA hazardous, pharmaceuticals, and medical waste disposal. Passionate about environmental outcomes and healthcare waste minimization, Daniels applies its 4-walls approach to identify current behaviors within each facility we work including occupational risks, movement inefficiencies, incorrect segregation and other cost-drivers, and provide containment, location, audit and training solutions to optimize healthcare waste segregation and workplace safety.

Wyoming Biohazardous Waste Disposal Guidelines

While its population may be less than 600,000, Wyoming has a strong healthcare system. The Wyoming Medical Center serves more than half the state’s population and was awarded the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2018, recognizing its commitment in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients. Where there are healthcare facilities, there is medical waste; the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality’s Solid and Hazardous Waste Division and OSHA oversee the state’s regulations. Wyoming’s definition of biohazardous waste is defined as “any waste generated in the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of human beings or animals ,” and in addition to this, any used or unused sharps (suture needles, scalpel blade and syringes) are also considered medical waste. Medical waste generators are required to correctly treat any medical or infectious waste prior to disposal and ensure it’s correctly labeled for transport.

Let's Talk about Wyoming

While the “Equality State” will be remembered as the first in the US to give women the vote, it’s also home to some spectacular attractions such as Devil’s Tower, the Rocky and Bighorn Mountains and Gannet Peak.

Wyoming’s sprawling, grassy green plains and mountain ranges once provided the backdrop to the Wild West, so it’s no surprise that most of the events Wyoming is famous for center around Cowboys. “Old West Days” is a 4-day festival marking the beginning of summer in Jackson; paying homage to its history the town transforms into a street party with rodeos, live bands and local food. In August the celebrity and skiing hot spot of Jackson Hole celebrates its Scottish history with the “Jackson Hole Scottish Festival.” In summer Star Valley celebrates mountain living with their “Alpine Mountain Days Festival”, and every July cowboys come from all over to the capital’s Frontier Park for a shot at the $1 million in prize money for the annual “Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo.”

Indisputably the biggest drawcard of the state is Yellowstone National Park, hosting more than 4 million visitors every year. The World Heritage Site has more than 300 campsites, 15 miles of boardwalks, 1,000 miles of trails, and 90 trailheads that spill into the neighboring states of Idaho and Montana. Today it remains one of the largest well-preserved temperate-zone ecosystems on the planet, home to hundreds of species of animals including the endangered grey wolf. The best way to get a glimpse of the top attractions is to drive the Grand Loop and get a front seat view of the geyser known as “Old Faithful,” the rainbow colors of the Upper Geyser Basin and Morning Glory Pool, the Grand Prismatic Spring, Minera Terrace, Yellowstone Lake and Mount Washburn.

Waste Classification

In Wyoming, regulated medical waste is defined as:

  • Cultures and stocks of infectious agents and associated biologicals
  • Pathological waste, meaning tissues, organs, and body parts and body fluids that are removed during surgery or autopsy, or other medical procedures.
  • Sharps that have been used in animal or human patients or the treatment or in medical, research or industrial laboratories.  Unused sharps are also considered medical waste, including discarded sharps, such as hypodermic needles, suture needles, syringes, and scalpel blades.

Storage Requirements

Wyoming state requirements mandate:

Medical waste should be stored in a secure manner and location that affords protection from theft, vandalism, inadvertent human or animal exposure, rain, water, and wind. The waste shall be managed so as not to provide a breeding place or food for insects or rodents, and not generate noxious odors. Generators of medical waste are not required to refrigerate the waste, but must store it in a secure manner and not create a nuisance
