Infectious Waste Regulations in Massachusetts

As with other states, Massachusetts has its own regulations regarding the management of biohazardous and medical waste.

These regulations, governed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, dictate that all medical or biological waste (except for home sharps users) must be deactivated by autoclave or chemical treatment before being disposed as Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). We, Daniels Health, have been managing biohazardous waste in Massachusetts since 2003, increasing the safety standards of traditional medical waste handling, and dramatically reducing the environmental impact of other collection and treatment methods currently in use in the United States.

MASSACHUSETTS WASTE SEGREGATION GUIDELINES

Customized Medical Waste Management

Choosing a medical waste company should be a seamless encounter. Whether it’s us (we hope it is!) or another vendor, here are some helpful questions to ask prospective medical waste companies

  • Do you offer a range of medical waste containers that are standards-compliant medical waste bins to suit all volume requirements
  • Do you have your own trucks and treatment facilities or will my account be given to another third party contractor to manage?
  • What level of insurance do you have to protect the risk profile of my facility?
  • Do you have local expertise to manage my compliance requirements in accordance with state regulations?
  • If I place a service call, will I be speaking directly to someone who can make a change to my account or service schedule?
  • Do you provide a clinically designed sharps container (well that one's a long shot! but let us tell you how we at Daniels do this so well!)....

Safety Engineered Sharps Containers

We understand the risk of injury with sharps disposal, and as such we pioneered a study in 2006 and 2007, whereby we tested the effectiveness of our sharps safety devices.

By introducing the Daniels Sharpsmart sharps disposal system to the 67 acute care hospitals in the Ascension Health network, the largest nonprofit health system in the US, we saw incredible results, including:

  • 30% reduction in after-procedure sharps injuries
  • 57% reduction in disposal related sharps injuries
  • 81% reduction in container associated sharps injuries

In the 12 years following this study, we have maintained our focus on innovation and today offer some of the most innovative, safe and efficient sharps containment solutions in the country. The current Daniels Health Sharpsmart system is designed to be environmentally friendly and is clinically proven to reduce needlestick injuries by up to 87%, making it one of our most popular sharps waste solutions for healthcare facilities in Massachusetts.

Let's Talk about Massachusetts

Massachusetts is known for Boston, baseball, and Sam Adams beer. It's one of the original 13 colonies, and is landing place of the Mayflower and the pilgrims. Massachusetts was also pivotal in the American Revolution, and is most famously home of the Boston Tea Party.

It wasn’t until 1620 that pilgrims seeking religious freedom arrived at Cape Cod Bay in a ship called the Mayflower and founded Plymouth Colony. Plymouth Colony was the first colonial settlement in New England, but the harsh winter that followed the ship’s arrival, claimed the lives of half the pilgrims. Those who survived consulted with local Native American tribes, learning how to plant corn and endure the winter. In November of the following year they held a harvest feast; the intention was to give thanks for the crop and their survival. This auspicious occasion was to become one of America and Canada’s most celebrated traditions, a tradition we recognise today as Thanksgiving. Massachusetts also played a crucial role in America’s Industrial Revolution, as the manufacturing of textiles began to boom, the move to mechanical from manual labor spurred up to 45 new towns along Massachusetts’s rivers including  Greenfield, Haverhill, Worcester and Ludlow.

Nowadays, Massachusetts is known for its academic alumni, sports and celebs. Cambridge’s world-famous Harvard University, was established in 1636 as the first institution of higher education in the United States, and since that time, 168 Nobel Prize winners have conducted their work in Massachusetts’s universities. When it comes to sport, the Bostonians are some of the most fanatical in the country, cheering for the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics or the Bruins. There’s also a swag of famous faces that called the Bay State home including; Oscar winning brothers Ben and Casey Affleck, co-star and pal Matt Damon, wrestler, actor and rapper John Cena, and famed boxer Rocky Marciano, the Wahlbergs – Mark and Donnie, as well as funny men Matthew Perry and Steve Carell.

Waste Classification

Medical or Biomedical waste is waste that because of its characteristics may cause, or significantly contribute to, an increase in mortality or an increase in serious irreversible or incapacitating reversible illness; or pose a substantial present potential hazard to human health or the environment when improperly treated, stored, transported, disposed of, or otherwise managed.

Storage Requirements

Massachusetts state requirements mandate:

  • All medical or biological waste, except sharps, shall be contained in a primary container which is a red, fluorescent orange or orange-red plastic bag that is impervious to moisture and has sufficient strength to resist ripping, tearing, or bursting under normal conditions of use and handling, and which meets the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) standard D1922 06a and ASTM D1709-04.
